Subaru Tecnica International (STI) - Subaru’s official motorsports division entered one custom-tuned SUBARU Impreza WRX STI at this year’s edition of the 24hr Nurburgring race, which ended on Sunday the 16th of May.
Speaking at the Subaru press conference on Friday the 14th of May, STI President Hiroyuki Karamatsu stated that the team’s main goals were to “showcase the manufacturer’s engagement in pursuing engineering excellence through the use of motorsport activities.” and were also “aimed at developing safe and reliable products that provide driving confidence and to entertain Subaru’s many loyal fans.”
Entered 137th among a crowd of 250 (out of which only 123 completed the race) Subaru’s Impreza WRX STI managed an around-the-clock, full-throttle and trouble-free 139 laps, completing 3,527.5km in 23:59:47secs. STI team manager and head of vehicle testing, Hideharu Tatsumi, said his driver quartet put out an outstanding performance. Experienced Subaru driver, Kazuo Shimizu, set off the pace, followed by STI first-timers, Dutchman Carlo van Dam and German Marcel Engels, whose lap times improved as the race progressed. The Subaru team and fans cheered in excitement as Toshihiro Yoshida passed the finish line to post the fourth best time in the SP3T category, finishing in the 24th position overall.

This year’s custom-tuned SUBARU Impreza WRX STI included major improvements, such as a reduction in overall weight, a lower centre of gravity, improved drivability, more responsive handling, increased power output and optimized transmission gear ratios.
