More than reaching the moon or mars, NASA’s exploration with United States agriculture is featured in Maryland farm’s themed corn maze this fall.

"As our population grows, farmers face a tough challenge to feed the world. Knowing that NASA and the USDA are working to improve agriculture in America, this year’s maze highlights the positive impact they will have in the next 50 years and beyond.”

Summers Farm’s biggest mission yet is tied to NASA’s 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Every fall, the Frederick-based successful multi-generational family farm features a cause worthy of attention by cultivating a gigantic 12-acre themed corn maze. Their 50th anniversary NASA-themed maze provides the backdrop for inspiration and promotes NASA’s strong partnership with the USDA and commitment to the future of American agriculture.

“Being a third generation farmer, agriculture has always been a big part of my life,” said Teresa Summers. “As our population grows, farmers face a tough challenge to feed the world. Knowing that NASA and the USDA are working to improve agriculture in America, this year’s maze highlights the positive impact they will have in the next 50 years and beyond.”

This year’s maze promotes the importance of this partnership as scientific data is collected to support efficient practices in the agricultural industry, as well as promote the growth of healthy forests and soils, and bring about healthier diets, said Teresa Summers. The important work taking place today will help farmers better prepare for droughts, grow sustainable crops, and take better care of the Earth’s environment.

When Summers Farm’s widely popular Fall Festival opens September 21, thousands will not only find wholesome fun for the entire family but learn more about the successes of agricultural production. Each year, more than 10,000 students visit the farm to learn the value of agriculture and the difference farmers make in our community. The NASA-inspired maze provides an opportunity to learn more about the agency’s impact on agricultural achievements with clues interspersed throughout the maze. It’s a fun and educational way to find a way out of the gigantic cornstalk labyrinth.

Through October 31, Summers Farm features farm-friendly festival classics, including genuine, old-fashioned wagon rides to the pick-your-own pumpkin patch. Plus, there are more than 45 activities including slides, farmer golf, gigantic-sized jumping pillows, and farm animals. On weekends, the festival includes apple-blasting, pig races, and mouth-watering confections including homemade cookies, brick oven pizza, and apple cider donuts. The farm rents campfires, hosts fireworks-specific weekends, and extends maze fun with bring-your-own-flashlights for “Nights on the Farm.”

Space exploration has evolved since Neil Armstrong’s historic feats; for NASA, one giant leap for mankind was just the beginning. Summers Farm is proud to take part in this anniversary event with agricultural and educational fun on the farm with its “Mission to the Moon” maze paving the way for the next generation and beyond.
