White paper explains how to optimize industrial 5 GHz deployments for mobile devices

Summit radios meet the rigorous requirements we demand for our customers. Summit’s new 30 Series modules continue to exceed our expectations while giving us a cost-effective way to offer dual-band support.

Summit Data Communications , the leading provider of industrial-strength embedded Wi-Fi® solutions, today announced two dual-band SDIO radio modules that are ideal for handheld mobile computers and other rugged mobile devices. The SDC-SSD30AG module is Summit's first system-in-package (SiP) offering and has a length and width of just 15 mm. The SDC-MSD30AG module is a drop-in replacement for Summit's popular SDC-MSD10G module. Both 30 Series modules are priced at or below Summit's 802.11g modules, which means that customers gain 802.11a support at no additional charge.

"802.11a operates in the 5 GHz frequency band, which is much less crowded than the 2.4 GHz band where 802.11b and 802.11g operate,” says Chris Bolinger, Summit's VP of Sales and Marketing. "Summit's 30 Series modules offer dual-band support with the full Summit feature set, proven on over 700,000 business-critical mobile devices. And with our aggressive pricing of the 30 Series modules, there's no price penalty for 5 GHz functionality.”

Like other Summit products, the 30 Series modules include unique hardware and software refinements to ensure reliable operation in the most challenging environments. Hardware enhancements boost range – the distance between the Wi-Fi infrastructure and the client device with Summit inside – while minimizing power consumption and maximizing operating temperature range. Software enhancements deliver essential capabilities such as robust security, fast roaming between infrastructure endpoints, voice support, and enterprise-class administration.

Summit strategic alliance partner Datalogic Mobile is among the first to incorporate 30 Series modules in its products. "Summit radios meet the rigorous requirements we demand for our customers,” said Tom Burke, Vice President of Product Marketing & Support at Datalogic Mobile. "Summit's new 30 Series modules continue to exceed our expectations while giving us a cost-effective way to offer dual-band support.”

Both 30 Series modules will support all features required for Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) certification and earn the Cisco Compatible seal soon. Both modules operate on all supported versions of Windows Embedded CE and Windows Mobile®, including Windows Mobile 6.5.

Concurrent with the launch of its new dual-band modules, Summit has released a white paper on how to optimize Wi-Fi operation in the 5 GHz band. Focusing on industrial environments, which pose challenges to reliable connectivity for mobile devices, the white paper reveals that an 802.11n infrastructure overcomes Wi-Fi's traditional weaknesses in 5 GHz. The new white paper is available at http://www.summitdatacom.com/whitepapers.htm.

The list price for the SDC-SSD30AG module is US$79; the list price for the SDC-MSD30AG module is US$99. Volume discounts are available to qualified mobile device vendors. The purchase price covers Summit's market-leading radio hardware and software, software upgrades, and a broad range of certification and support services provided by Summit and Summit partners. Both modules are generally available now.
