Hamilton Sundstrand’s Jeff Devenberg presents QCMI CEO Bob Grande and COO Rick Urban with the prestigious United Technologies 2011 UTC Supplier Gold Award.

The UTC Supplier Gold program is critical to our success in providing best-in-class quality products. Without the commitment of our entire company, this achievement would not be possible,” said Founder and CEO Bob Grande

As one of the nation’s leaders in complex machined components and assemblies, Quality Controlled Manufacturing (QCMI), is pleased to announce it has earned the prestigious United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Supplier Gold status for the third consecutive year. Using stringent criteria, the Supplier Gold program acknowledges a supplier for its exceptional performance over 12 consecutive months.

QCMI specializes in providing a full spectrum of machining services from general to complex precision machining of all metals including exotic alloys. Some of the industries QCMI manufactures components for are aerospace, power generation, Department of Defense (DOD), oil and gas, marine, and heavy equipment.

UTC Supplier Gold facilitates operational improvements for suppliers using key metrics aligned with Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) practices. Participation is voluntary and nominations for the Supplier Gold assessment process must come from UTC divisions or corporate. The process is a method for aligning and linking the entire value stream around customer-focused metrics. A key benefit of the program is the acceleration of performance improvements. Rigorous criteria quantify the nominee’s quality, delivery, lean practices and customer satisfaction.

Hamilton Sundstrand supply chain managers re-nominated QCMI for the Supplier Gold re-certification process. Upon UTC’s acceptance of the nomination, the San Diego area manufacturer documented performance levels over 12 months. Performance excellence was determined through documentation of the following criteria: quality, delivery, market feedback analysis, lean assessment and an on-site validation evaluation by the Supplier Gold team. The standalone initiative required QCMI to utilize quality and lean tools. The following assessments were included: certified quality clinic system; relentless root cause analysis and corrective action (RRCA); process certification; standardized work processes; set up reduction; value stream mapping; continuous improvement; 5S (sort, set-in-order, shine, standardize, sustain) methodologies; and total production maintenance.

In the category of supplier excellence/quality, QCMI reported zero escapes (or customer returns) over 12 months. And, for superior excellence/customer defined delivery, QCMI reported Best in Class at 99.4% (2009 and 2010 and 2011). Out of a possible 500 score for UTC manufacturing operations’ lean assessment category, QCMI scored 440, with 350 the qualifying target. In addition, QCMI achieved a six out of seven in the “ease of doing business” market feedback analysis category.

With the re-certification, QCMI is in the ranks of a prestigious group of industry suppliers including, but not limited to, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Kawasaki and Honeywell. Supplier Gold status suppliers work with UTC subsidiaries such as Hamilton Sundstrand, Pratt & Whitney, Sikorsky, Carrier, Otis and UTC Power, UTC Fire & Security and others.

“Recognition from UTC and Hamilton Sundstrand for three consecutive years validates the emphasis we place on a gold standard of performance and customer service. The UTC Supplier Gold program is critical to our success in providing best-in-class quality products,” said Founder and CEO Bob Grande. “Without the commitment of our entire company and continued support from Hamilton Sundstrand, this achievement would not be possible. The Supplier Gold status is an ongoing quest for QCMI to uphold. It must be earned each year.”
