It’s truly about shamelessly drinking wine that you love, not what wineries or critics tell you to like.

Dating services abound for locating that perfect mate, but what about a matchmaker for Merlot? Thanks to Swanson Vineyards’ new Vinotype™ program launching today, wine lovers can discover which wines best fit their personalities, and perhaps spark an exciting new romance-in-a-glass.

Guests visiting the Sip Shoppe at the Swanson Vineyards Napa Valley tasting room can discover their Vinotype, free of charge, in a brand new interactive iPad experience that the winery has introduced as the first such profiling system in the world.

Created by Master of Wine/Certified Wine Educator Tim Hanni, the program addresses the fact that, for a variety of psychological and physiological reasons such as individual taste buds and cultural experiences, people taste things differently. In fact, two people can react in opposite ways to an identical sensation.

By responding to three simple questions about their every day life, visitors are presented with wine recommendations that others like them enjoy.

According to Swanson Vineyards’ creative director Alexis Swanson Traina, “It’s truly about shamelessly drinking wine that you love, not what wineries or critics tell you to like.”

The pot-stirring Hanni perfected this “sensory sensitivity survey” over 20 years of wine consumer studies and analysis.

The four main Vinotypes are SWEET, HYPERSENSITIVE, SENSITIVE, or TOLERANT, based on sensitivity and tolerance for sweetness, alcohol, oak, tannins and fruit intensity. “Within each Vinotype™, people often also have varying degrees of curiosity,” says Hanni, with some being very content and other being more adventurous.”

The assessment is currently in use at both the Swanson website and Sip Shoppe where Vinotyping can be carried over into an interactive tasting.

“If someone is identified as a SWEET Vinotype™, don't bother pouring big reds,” says Swanson Traina. “We can custom tailor their experience with wines that appeal to their Vinotype™ such as our portfolio of gorgeous sweet wines. Our staff does a lot of this analysis already, but knowing the Vinotypes and having the personal discussion with people provides a more concrete framework for us.”

Besides the practical part of Vinotyping, the experience is engaging for participants, who get to explore their personalities and have fun doing it.

“The purpose is to create a unique experience for people where they learn something about themselves and the world of wine,” says Swanson Traina. “When we gave the survey to our staff and family, the responses were surprising yet accurate. We can’t wait to share it with our visitors to the winery.”
