Orion Health Plays Key Role in U.S. Disease Tracking

More than 45 state health departments across the U.S. are now using technology from software developer Orion Health, (http://www.orionhealth.com ), to help improve nation-wide early detection and rapid response for potentially catastrophic infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal agencies are urging state departments of health to strengthen their emergency preparedness, response and health tracking systems to provide access to information that could be important in an emergency response or in trend analysis of health patterns.

Orion Health's off-the shelf software, Rhapsody™ Integration Engine, (http://www.orionhealth.com/products/rhapsody/ ), is helping to ease the pressure on healthcare organizations by streamlining the task of processing hundreds of thousands of pieces of health data. Data is collected daily from thousands of different patients with a variety of health conditions, including swine flu.

Rhapsody increases the accuracy and speed with which healthcare organizations can collect reportable data from disparate systems. Each day, Rhapsody processes thousands of these messages, then it securely delivers them to public health agencies using Orion Health's PHINMS Public Health Information Messaging Service.

The software makes it easy for state workers to automatically feed data into the CDC's nationwide disease surveillance systems, to create reports, and provide health officers at the local, regional and national levels with access to information that could be important to an emergency response.

In 27 states, Rhapsody is also used as part of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS), a CDC initiative that promotes the use of data and information system standards to advance the development of efficient, integrated, and interoperable surveillance systems at federal, state and local levels and is a major component of the Public Health Information Network (PHIN).

Orion Health CEO Ian McCrae stated, "The U.S. healthcare system is an acknowledged leader in understanding the need for improved public health surveillance supporting secure and timely exchange of information from clinicians and laboratories to the public health community for trend analysis and disease intervention.

"Rhapsody is providing the mechanism for state departments of health to collect data from medical laboratories state-wide and share data to support the nation's public health needs and for early detection and rapid response to potentially catastrophic infectious disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies such as the swine flu and avian influenza.

"This type of integration and automated messaging was not previously possible as the cost and effort to port the data into one location was too great. The laboratory information must be transmitted securely, with full privacy protection, into a specific format, an HL7 message, which is typically not the format it is received in. The accuracy and timeliness of this data are essential to the early detection of a bioterrorism attack or pandemic health issue," said Mr. McCrae.

Rhapsody's ability to integrate data from virtually any legacy data source, to normalise it into a standard HL7 message, and to feed it into a preferred viewing or management system has made it popular with hospitals as well as government organizations. Rhapsody serves as the integrator for electronic health records (EHRs) in recognized e-health programs around the globe.
