Harry Potter Quits Flying for a Ford Fiesta

As Harry Potter turns 17 in his latest film, 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' Swinton is offering to insure the young wizard for just over £1,500 if he were to exchange his broomstick for a car.

In the wizard world turning 17 means coming of age, but in the muggle world, 17 means being old enough to learn to drive. If Harry Potter swapped his Nimbus 2000 for a Ford Fiesta 957cc three door hatchback, his annual insurance would cost £1,547, according to Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance.

As a newly qualified 17 year old driver living at 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, the residency of adopted muggle family the Dursleys, Harry would benefit from off road parking living in a quiet cul-de-sac. And as a full-time student only using the car for occasional social use, the young wizard would have a low annual mileage helping to reduce the cost of his insurance policy.

Harry could benefit from a voluntary excess of £500, and over a few short years would be able to build up a substantial no claims discount by making vehicle repairs himself using the "Reparo" spell.

Unlike most drivers, Harry would never need to worry about losing his car keys, a simple flick of the wand and the "Alohomora" spell will open a locked car door. He could also protect his car from theft by using the "Colloportus" charm which magically locks a door, preventing it from being opened by Muggle means.

Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager, for Swinton, said: "Young drivers often struggle to find a good car insurance quote as many providers discriminate against young people. At Swinton we are constantly championing young drivers, aiming to provide them with a fair price by searching through hundreds of prices from leading insurers.

"By providing this quote for Harry Potter we want to show that despite Harry's unusual living arrangements and 'unique' career path, we are still able to offer him a car insurance quote at is both competitive and affordable."

Turning 17 in the wizard world means becoming eligible to use magic outside of the school premises, which in Harry's case is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Also at 17 a young wizard can take an apparition test, which is a magical form of transportation whereby the wizard teleports from one place to another.
