Swinton is warning that parties to celebrate exam results are one of be the biggest causes of damage homes during August and could lead to a major spike in home insurance claims.
The increased use of social network sites to advertise house parties has been linked to this rise in party damage and claims. Websites such as Facebook and Bebo allow large numbers of people to be easily invited to a party, and if 'privacy settings' are not used then there is no way of controlling who is invited.
Two weeks ago over 100 people were involved in a street fracas during a house party in Hampshire which got out of control following an invitation issued on Facebook. A police helicopter and dog section were both called out after revellers spilled on to the streets causing damage to homes and littering the roads with glass and rubbish.
Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager for Swinton, said; "During the summer months we'd advise parents in particular to be cautious about letting their children throw parties.
"Advertising house parties on Facebook or other social networking sites can easily lead to gatecrashers. Claiming on home insurance for damage caused at parties could lead to an increase in premiums."
