Millions of Drivers Flaunting the Rules of the Road

A staggering 82% of drivers break the Highway Code at least once per week, according to an anonymous online survey of 1,000 motorists by Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance.

Of those questioned 73% said they had broken the speed limit in the past week and 18% had parked on a double yellow line within the past month. A naughty 23% admitted to knowingly driving up a one way street the wrong way and 62% said they often drive through traffic lights when they are on amber.

The survey also found that 12% motorists still use their mobile phones while at the wheel and 46% said they eat or drink while driving.

Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager for, said: "It is quite concerning that so many motorists are blatantly flaunting the rules of the road. We advise all drivers to follow the Highway Code to the letter. Any rule breaking could lead to prosecution or worse still, result in a driver losing their licence altogether."
