SwitchPlanet.com, a Fresno based internet trading platform aims not only to succeed in business, but also help society and the environment. The company’s mission is simple, “establish a premier online community that is committed to helping reduce the impact waste is having on the planet by trading the things we no longer use to get the things we want.”
Members can currently trade their CDs, DVDs and games online for free. SwitchPlanet.com understands buying media items can be an expensive habit; therefore the site makes it possible for members to trade away their old items for new ones with the use of Switchbucs, the site’s internal trading currency. Members get Switchbucs when they send an item and they spend Switchbucs when they get an item. SwitchPlanet.com may be described as a mix of Netflix, craigslist and eBay, but for free and for charity.
Founder Chris Samarin states, “My vision is to create something useful and beneficial to people in their real world lives, not just on the internet and make opportunities available to help society and the environment.”
With each “switch” members are given the option to donate money. Donations are placed in a SwitchFund to be dispersed among five different charities. These charities include: The Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, The Nature Conservancy, American Cancer Society and Child’s Play Charity. Donations are not mandatory, but encouraged and members can choose to donate as much or as little as they wish.
“I want this thing to be huge so the positive impact it has on society is also huge,” states Samarin, “If we can get millions of people using the site and donating an average of $1 per month, wow, we can sure help a lot of people.”
At SwitchPlant.com members save money by trading the things they already have but no longer use to get the things they need. Because SwitchPlanet is free to use members are given the option to donate any amount they choose every time they receive something for free on the SwitchPlanet Network. These donations are put into a SwitchFund that is then distributed among selected charities and non-profit organizations. Founded by a young entrepreneur, Chris Samarin, with headquarters in Fresno, CA.
