“I really have no words for what I saw other than we did the right thing. At the end of the day, we helped the people who truly needed it.”

Sustainable Waste Solutions (SWS), the only Landfill Free waste and recycling company servicing Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley and Delaware, is well known for its efforts helping local businesses protect the environment.

During the past two weeks, however, SWS, its employees and other local companies and residents joined together to make a difference when nature itself was the problem.

"The destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy was truly horrifying,” said Dieter Scheel, Vice President, Business Development of SWS. “Watching events unfold on TV made it even worse — entire neighborhoods lost to fires and flooding, little beach-side towns I’ve known all my life swept away in a matter of hours. Something had to be done. And once the rain stopped, I got on the phone and started doing it.”

Starting with a cash donation and the use of a 24’ box truck from SWS, Scheel began gathering donations of food, money and supplies from local residents and businesses to deliver to the hurricane-devastated Belmar/Asbury Park, New Jersey area. Upon their arrival with these much-needed items, he and other volunteers set up a relief station where people could come for supplies and a warm meal.

“We had a line of grills where we were cooking for relief workers and residents, and there was one little boy about 10 in line who’d lost everything,” said Dieter. “All he wanted was a hamburger. The smile on his face when he got it was priceless to everyone there helping.”

“I really have no words for what I saw other than we did the right thing. At the end of the day, we helped the people who truly needed it.”
