TELUS deploying Symmetricom time and frequency solutions in more than 250 Canadian offices to support next-generation services.

Symmetricom today announced that Canadian telecommunications company TELUS has selected its time and frequency solutions for a network-wide synchronization upgrade. TELUS will equip over 250 offices throughout Canada to support next-generation services including IPTV, VoIP and 3G wireless. The upgrade will include Symmetricom’s TimeHub 5500 Synchronization Supply Unit; TimeProvider for network access synchronization; TimeSource 3000 Primary Reference Source; and Symmetricom’s synchronization network management system, TimePictra.

“With over 10 million customer connections for Canadian wireless and wireline users, TELUS recognizes the importance of timing in the network and is taking critical steps to support next-generation services, optimize bandwidth utilization and ensure network reliability and interoperability,” said Leonard Hendricks, TELUS director of data/IP and transport. “Symmetricom offers the most complete suite of next-generation synchronization and timing products designed to maximize network performance. This enables us to provide our customers with the highest performance network available, a mandatory requirement for leadership in this market.”

High quality time and frequency alignment is an essential network infrastructure component that facilitates the reliable transmission of voice, video and data. Symmetricom’s TimeProvider is a timing signal distributor that will pace the flow of information through TELUS’ network, while TimePictra measuring and monitoring software will provide the visibility and control necessary to quickly respond to alarms and reduce service interruptions. The TimeHub 5500 is Symmetricom’s next-generation Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU) that meets the most stringent requirements for telecommunication products (Telcordia and NEBS Level 3), enabling all the Network Elements to perform at maximum efficiency. Symmetricom’s TimeSource 3000 is a stand alone office Primary Reference Source with integrated GPS receiver which meets GR2830 requirements, also selected by TELUS for the network upgrade.

“This network-wide upgrade will help TELUS to continue bringing customers the highest quality network required to offer new, leading-edge services such as IPTV, VoIP and 3G Wireless,” commented Nancy Shemwell, executive vice president, global sales and service at Symmetricom. “Additionally, TELUS will be able to monitor and proactively support its extensive network from one centralized location while simultaneously maximizing quality of service.”

“This network upgrade program demonstrates TELUS’ leadership in the Canadian marketplace,” said Glen Emo, chief executive officer of Empowered Networks. “As one of Symmetricom’s key partners in Canada, Empowered provides engineering, consulting and support services to TELUS. Our synchronization team has worked with TELUS to develop the requirements and details of this initiative, and we’re very pleased to play an active and ongoing role in ensuring its success.”

Installation for the network-wide upgrade will occur through 2008.
