“Children in Syria are facing a ‘dire’ situation. They are often tortured or sexually abused. Their schools are attacked or used for fighting.” Leila Zerrougui, the United Nations special representative on children in conflict, said at a Security Council meeting, in a report published in Csmonitor on September 20th-2012. In the same report, a British-based group called War Child said the Syrian conflict is “disturbingly unique” in the deliberate targeting of children, citing reports of hundreds of children being detained by the regime.

Dr Rouzana Haren, SSF board member, and organizer of the event in Michigan, said” Our major goal of this event ‘Global walk for children of Syria' is to raise the awareness of the impact of the catastrophe in Syria on Children, who are the most innocent victims of this ongoing crisis. On November 17th, people will take to the streets in cities all over the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, UK, Libya, Turkey, France, Italy and Germany, in a global campaign to help save the children of Syria. We hope to generate fund that will support the aid programs of the UNICEF and UNHCR directed to help children inside Syria and in the refugee camps. The number of children who are victims of Assad regime atrocities and brutality is appalling, and predicted to increase in the next year. We urge the local communities to participate and donate generously.”
