SEO welcomes the announcement of the broader opposition group, “Syrian National Coalition” that includes representatives from all opposition groups that are fighting to topple Bashar Al-Assad’s regime. SEO congratulates the elected Islamic cleric Ahmed Moaz Al-Khatib as president of the new coalition, the leading opposition figures Riad Seif and Suheir Atassi who were elected as vice presidents, and Mustafa Sabbagh as the coalition’s secretary-general.
In his acceptance speech, Al-Khatib reassured the international community of the peaceful nature of the Syrian uprising, and emphasized on the imperative to avoid acts of revenge in the future. The Washington Post reported that Al-Khatib noted many soldiers and security officers of the Syrian army are “honorable people” and that he and the coalition call on to defect from the corrupt regime. SEO reiterates Al-Khatib’s calls and stresses on the importance of unity in face of the atrocities committed by the regime.
SEO supports Al-Khatib and all members of the new coalition, and views this new opposition entity “Syrian National coalition” as a mandatory and critical step in the pathway to oust the Assad regime and establish a free and democratic Syria.
SEO urges all pro-democratic countries in the world, the UN, and the EU to recognize the “Syrian National Coalition” as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
