The last minute tax filing rush is on, and Liberty Tax is offering extended hours to accommodate customers through the April 18 deadline. Unemployed and financially challenged taxpayers who owe this year and are worried about their ability to pay to examine enhanced options offered by the IRS. The IRS has expanded the offer-in-compromise program that allows a settlement of the taxpayer’s tax liability for less than the full amount owed based on the individual’s current financial situation, income and future earning potential. Previously, the IRS determined the amount of the offer in compromise on the taxpayer’s earnings in prior years. Other options include paying the tax debt with a loan or credit card, or agreeing to pay through installments.

Allyson Woodruff, Chesterton, IN, was one of the six entrants selected from more than 385 entries. Woodruff, who lives with her parents, has a three-year-old severely developmentally delayed son and two-year-old daughter. To provide her son the level of care he needs from maintaining his feedings though his feeding tube to helping him learn to move on his own, Woodruff is unable to work.
