TCS Associates has a solid and successful history of providing voice recognition products and services to persons with disabilities, so it seemed a natural move to offer those same cutting edge technologies to medical professionals through products like Dragon Medical Practice Edition.

TCS Associates is now helping physicians (in addition to lawyers, social workers and other professionals) and medical practices realize the significant time and cost savings of transitioning from manual to voice entry of data with the use of Dragon Medical Practice Edition. Dragon Medical Practice Edition is a powerful and configurable voice recognition solution for small practices with 24 physicians or less, and greatly facilitates the entry of patient notes, coding or prescription information into a practice’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) software.

For medical practices that already have an Electronic Health Record system in place, TCS supports the integration and customization of programs such as Dragon Medical Practice Edition into their existing office IT infrastructure. Dragon Medical Practice Edition is a state-of-the-art speech recognition technology, which allows the user to get large amounts of spoken text into the computer quickly and accurately (99% accuracy). Dragon Medical Practice Edition has expanded its vocabularies and now covers nearly 60 medical specialties and subspecialties. A typical medical practice that incorporates speech recognition technology into their daily operations can increase their productivity by 50 percent, and save money by lowering their administrative and transcription costs.

“TCS' work with persons with disabilities provides a perfect foundation for the services we now offer to doctors' offices,” says Harris Rosensweig, Manager of Assistive Technology at TCS. “When working with a disabled person, the stakes can be high in that if you don't get the technology to work, the person may lose their job. TCS brings this same level of commitment to supporting doctors' offices with Dragon Medical Practice Edition. We take the time and financial resources that medical practices invest in new technologies seriously and go the extra mile to ensure physicians and staff are well trained in its capabilities.”

According to Rosensweig, "TCS' expertise with Dragon extends back nearly to the origins of the product in the 1990s when the user had to speak one word at a time (Dragon Dictate). Our interest with Dragon began with persons with disabilities whose dexterity issues prevented them from using a standard keyboard. Dragon was one of the only solutions that allowed them to enter large quantities of text into the computer with reasonable accuracy and to control their computers by voice.” Rosensweig and his team became experts at creating custom voice commands with Dragon that allowed persons with disabilities to perform the same work tasks as their peers.

Regarding Dragon Medical Practice Edition, TCS' team offers medical practices a free assessment to determine how to integrate speech recognition into their particular office workflow, and to ensure that Dragon Medical Practice Edition can best meet the needs of that practice. Their services include full service integration, training, and recommendations for other dictation products that work well with the software. One of the products that complement Dragon Medical Practice Edition is the PowerMic II. This is a handheld microphone with programmable buttons that is well liked by doctors using Dragon Medical Practice Edition, says Rosensweig. The buttons allow for greater control of the microphone and navigation through an EHR.
