Boise, ID (Vocus) January 26, 2010

Idaho became the third state this month to hold a “Become a Teacher Day” in conjunction with events being held on an online teaching certification program through the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE). In a proclamation issued by Governor Butch Otter, Monday, January 25 has been named ‘Become a Teacher Day’ in the state, as ABCTE prepares to visit Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Nampa and Boise for live information sessions on its program this week.

The events—designed for anyone interested in changing careers to become a teacher in Idaho—are taking place in conjunction with a special New Year’s promotion that offers a $150 discount on the ABCTE program, bringing the total cost down to $825. ABCTE will visit Idaho Falls on Tuesday, January 26, Twin Falls on Wednesday, January 27, Nampa on Thursday, January 28 and Boise on Saturday, January 30.

“We’re very much looking forward to being back in Idaho for these information sessions, as it’s a state where we’ve seen one of the biggest responses to our program. Over 600 Idaho residents attended our events in 2009. Whether people attend the in-person or the online version, the events allow aspiring teachers to learn more about our certification program so they can determine if it’s right for them,” said ABCTE COO Bonnie Zuckerman, “The proclamation from Governor Otter is very much appreciated and we hope it will help to get the word out to even more people about our program.”

The events will include a 45 minute introduction to the program and offer an opportunity to have questions answered in-person by members of the ABCTE staff. Those wishing to get a further look at the program can sign up for a free one week trial, which gives individuals access to the entire ABCTE program before making any commitment to enroll.

“Deciding to change careers to become a teacher is a big step. We want people to be sure of what they’re getting into and to have the opportunity to see all the resources they get through ABCTE, prior to spending any money,” says Zuckerman. “The free trial is a great way for someone to sample the program before they enroll.”

Those interested in receiving $150 off the cost of ABCTE certification can use the discount code NewYears150 in the shopping cart on abcte.org. The program normally costs $975 ($825 with this promotion). Anyone who attends the events and enrolls on the spot will be eligible to receive additional complimentary study resources. For those looking for financial flexibility, ABCTE offers an installment plan that spreads payments out over several months.

To-date, ABCTE has issued over 700 teaching certifications to residents of Idaho and an additional 660 certifications are currently in progress. ABCTE offers certification in eleven subject areas in Idaho, including the high-need areas of math, science and special education.

The ABCTE program is also accepted by eight other states for public schools: Florida, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Utah. Many charter schools and private schools in other parts of the country also accept ABCTE certification. Overall, ABCTE has issued over 2,000 certifications.
