We see fitness as a way to not only keep our employees healthy and happy, but also a way to build camaraderie
Albany, OR (Vocus) January 16, 2008
On any given day you might see Steve Smith, Tec Laboratories’ chief executive officer, coming back from a vigorous run. Or, take a tour of the Albany company’s facility and you might get a chance to watch a group of employees playing a game of basketball. The company’s focus on fitness has landed it a spot on Men’s Fitness magazine’s list of America’s Fittest Companies in the most recent issue that hit store shelves this week.
The corporate culture at Tec Labs, makers of Tecnu and Staphaseptic, puts the focus on fitness because a person’s quality of life is at the center of what makes the company tick. All employees receive a free membership at the fitness center 200 yards away. When the new corporate headquarters were built in 2001, Smith made sure to have a basketball court included.
"We see fitness as a way to not only keep our employees healthy and happy, but also a way to build camaraderie," said Smith. "On a personal level, running outside in a place as amazing as Oregon is like taking a drink of water in the Sahara. I get enormous benefits from it; both mental and physical."
The area surrounding the company’s headquarters is lush and a perfect setting for jogging. Running trails make jogging appealing, even in the cool, wet winter months. For Smith, a focus on fitness makes perfect sense and contributes to the company’s ability to retain employees. The average length of employment is ten years.
