Riverside, CA (PRWEB) November 22, 2008 -- RSNA 2008 Booth 3661 -- Jesse Salen, the VP of Sales and Technology at Online Radiology Medical Group, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Online Radiology's new pilot tele-fMRI reading and consulting service, which is offered in a collaborative effort with the Functional MRI (fMRI) laboratory at the Program for Cognitive Science (PICS) at Columbia University Medical School, under the direction of Professor Joy Hirsch, Ph. D. According to Mr. Salen, "In working with Dr. Hirsch and her team at Columbia, we have been able to find a truly amazing synergistic fit between fMRI and tele-medicine that will help Online Radiology deliver this extremely advanced clinical technology to patients and their neurologic specialists around the country in a way that will significantly help improve patient outcomes."

Functional MRI is an exciting new technology, currently used at large medical research institutions for both basic science neurologic research and for FDA approved presurgical planning. Columbia Medical School has already issued valid CPT codes for billing purposes for fMRI testing prior to neurosurgical procedures. The technology makes it possible to non-invasively map vital areas of the brain including speech, sensory, and motor centers before surgical operations.

In conjunction with a the PICS laboratory at Columbia Medical School, Online Radiology can now assist facilities across the country in adding fMRI capture capability to their existing MRI scanners, process the images in a research laboratory with over 10 years of fMRI experience, have the fMRI studies interpreted by trained neuroradiologists, and return the processed fMRI study with a dictated report necessary for pre-surgical planning back to the patient's neurologic specialist. The entire process is managed via Online Radiology's fMRI consultants using technologies in collaboration with the PICS laboratory.
