“The arrival of the barges marks the start of the summer construction phase, during which Alaskans will begin to see the progress of this historic project,” said Martin Cary, vice president and general manager, GCI. “Not only will they see the physical construction of towers, but they will also feel the economic benefits through the employment of our numerous project partners.”
As microwave towers and fiber segments are constructed over the next several months, the $88 million stimulus project will employ many Alaska companies, including:
- Marsh Creek, an Anchorage-based company providing civil construction, energy systems, environmental construction and telecommunications. Marsh Creek is the prime contractor responsible for construction of 11 TERRA-SW microwave sites.
- Meridian Management, an Alaska, employee-owned firm established in 1998 to bring together the talents of experienced project managers and environmental professionals. Meridian Management is providing construction management services for the TERRA-SW project.
- Peak Oilfield Service Company, which provides quality-driven, cost-effective construction, maintenance, industrial cleaning, power generation and transportation services to support resource development companies in Alaska. Peak Oilfield Services Company is the prime contractor responsible for construction of the TERRA-SW fiber optics segments between Williamsport and Pile Bay and Iliamna and Fish Village.
- Southwest Alaska Contractors, a private, Alaska company based out of Naknek, provides custom-engineered industrial cranes and regional construction management. Southwest Alaska Contractors is a subcontractor responsible for construction of new TERRA-SW microwave communication sites in five southwest Alaska communities.

TERRA-SW will provide middle-mile terrestrial broadband service to 65 remote, rural communities in Bristol Bay and the Y-K Delta, including Bethel, Dillingham and King Salmon. Upon completion, TERRA-SW will make broadband available, to over 9,000 households and nearly 750 businesses in the covered communities. The project will also serve numerous public/non-profit/private community institutions and entities, such as regional healthcare providers, school districts and other regional and Alaska Native organizations. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
