Vocalware is looking to revolutionize the use of speech online by introducing uniform APIs that function in any browser and platform, in a plethora of languages and voices and billed through a simple “pay as you go” payment model. By incorporating voices from leading vendors, Vocalware expects to become a one-stop-shop for cloud-based speech. Oddcast Inc is no newcomer to TTS, having pioneered cloud based speech technology back in 2003. Since then TTS has been a core component within many of Oddcast’s services. Now for the first time, Oddcast packages TTS for use by any developer on any platform.

“We see Vocalware as an opportunity to share our technology with the developer community, and answer a basic need,” said Gil Sideman, Oddcast CEO. “Developers are looking to integrate speech without requiring users to install anything. Developers want it performing well on all platforms. They want it fairly and clearly priced. Vocalware delivers all that.”

One of the ways Vocalware differentiates itself is its unique payment model. Rather than charging per word or character, Vocalware charges per audio stream, which is a single audio playback instance of up to 60 seconds. According to Sideman, this reflects costs more accurately and transfers significant savings to the subscriber. Sign up is free, and every subscriber can try out the service with 2,000 free streams.

It’s quick and simple to get started with Vocalware. Subscribers can begin adding speech to applications using three different flavors of the TTS API: Javascript/HTML 5, Actionscript, and HTTP (REST). These options allow developers to utilize Vocalware in any type of online application, mobile or web site.

Vocalware does not require a contract or a term commitment. Subscribers simply purchase the usage they need, using a tiered pricing table ranging from 50 thousand to 4 million audio streams. Depending on the package the cost can be as low as $.0011 per stream.

Vocalware supports over 20 languages and more than 100 voices. In addition to several English language dialects, other available languages include, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, French, and Mandarin Chinese. A demo page showcases available languages and voices.
