Ready or not, here comes Thanksgiving. The cutlery experts at CUTCO believe that turkey triumph begins with the right kitchen tools. It's time to put together a "turkey toolbox" so you don't ruffle any feathers when it's time to prepare and carve the holiday turkey.

The experts at CUTCO, the largest manufacturer of high-quality kitchen cutlery in the United States and Canada, know that having the right tools for the right job is critical to culinary success and having them on hand when you need them is just as important.

"Thanksgiving and Christmas are fun-filled events, with family and friends gathered around the holiday table, lots of laughter and delicious food to share," said Sandra Grey, public relations manager for CUTCO Cutlery. "Having the right kitchen cutlery on hand means smooth and easy preparation and serving - easy for you and for guests who are helping you."

Give or take a tool or two, these are the essentials every cook's Turkey Toolbox should contain:

  • Sharp Knives

o Carving knife - A thin, sharp, recessed edge on your carving knife will ensure smooth cutting and beautiful slices.
o Trimmer (utility knife) - Always a trusty sidekick, the Trimmer will be called on often during stuffing preparation.
o Paring knives - A kitchen staple, you're going to need more than one for dinner preparation.

  • Carving Fork - Sharp, sturdy tines anchor the turkey firmly.
  • Cutting Boards - Don't use just any cutting surface. Polypropylene (plastic) is an edge-friendly surface that will keep your knife blades sharper longer. Glass and ceramic cutting boards will dull straight-edge knives quickly. Also, be sure to have more than one to avoid cross contamination of the food you're preparing. Stocking up with four cutting boards is ideal. You'll use one for uncooked meats, cooked meats, breads and vegetables.
  • Kitchen Scissors - CUTCO's Super Shears are handy for snipping everything from herbs for your stuffing to cutting the trussing chord binding the turkey legs.
  • Vegetable Peeler - Peeling that mound of potatoes is a pleasure when you have a sharp and comfortable Vegetable Peeler on hand.

"Holiday meals are fun to share and just as much fun to prepare with a bit of advanced planning," Ms. Grey said. "Having the right kitchen tools on hand lets you spend most of your time where you really want to be - with your guests."

Also consider infusing some healthy foods into your Thanksgiving meal. Turkey is already a naturally lean protein, so that's the easy part. Find ways to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your holiday menu.
