The Surrey is honored to receive two Gold Key Awards for Best Suite Design as well as Best Lounge/Bar Design at the 30th annual awards ceremony sponsored by Interior Design and HOTELS magazine. The hotel was also one of three finalists in two categories, Best Lobby/Reception Area Design and Best Urban Hotel Design, making The Surrey the hotel with the highest amount of nominations.
Built pre-war in Beaux-Arts architectural design, The Surrey re-opened in November 2009 following a $60+ million recreation by renowned architectural and interior designer Lauren Rottet. The hotel is reflective of its Upper East Side neighborhood, evoking the ambiance of a residential townhouse that has evolved over time with eclectic pieces that appear to have been acquired through worldly travels. The Surrey’s intimate collection of modern art was curated by Rottet herself, including pieces from esteemed artists such as Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge and Chuck Close. The Surrey was Rottet’s first foray into hospitality design, thus showcasing the firm’s broad range of talents and services that extends beyond one particular niche.
