It’s almost a given that the Darlington Council will rubber-stamp later this month a proposal to build the UK’s largest cattle market on the town’s outskirts.

These plans would see the town's current livestock market move from the site on Clifton Road to a magnificent new complex that would feature a business park for agriculture-related companies as well as a bio-gas plant.

It’s almost a given that the Darlington Council will rubber-stamp later this month a proposal to build the UK’s largest cattle market on the town’s outskirts.

The 17 million pound project is expected to generate 300 new jobs for the region’s agricultural sector. This facility will be a major acquisition for a small city of just 98,000, whose only claim to fame for 180-odd years has been that its platform graced the route of the world’s first railway passenger service – the Stockton and Darlington Railway founded in 1825.

Executive employment consultancy The UK Knack Group has announced the news, adding that the project is the darling of the Farmers’ Auction Mart Company, which wishes to construct a 123-acre complex close to Burtree. The UK Knack Group’s managing director added, “These plans would see the town’s current livestock market move from the site on Clifton Road to a magnificent new complex that would feature a business park for agriculture-related companies as well as a bio-gas plant.”

Steven Aitken, director at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart Company Limited, summed it up: "If the bid is successful, it will form the last piece of the jigsaw in order to get a new agricultural centre under way. It will mean an end to the weekly disruption caused by the market in the centre of Darlington and it will provide a much better service to all our customers and the farming community in general. The new sale yards will also create employment during the construction phase and 300 full-time jobs when it opens. It’s great news, not just for us as a business, but for the whole community. We will now press ahead with our plans as quickly as possible.”
Still to be finalised are ways to minimise the mart’s impact on residents.
