Ocado have acquired a 35 acre site at Birch Coppice Business Park in North Warwickshire.
“This is great news for the UK job market and a clear sign that things are improving despite of the current financial crisis” said the Managing Director of the UK Knack Group. “We need more private companies to create more jobs in order to get out of the crisis and Ocado is setting an example”
This will be Ocado’s second centre, which means that the potential capacity of the business could double. This new centre is expected to create 2000 jobs in the Warwickshire region and will make Ocado one of the major employers in the area. Its construction will begin very soon, as it is programmed to start operating by the end of 2012. This distribution centre will have the capacity to process 120,000 to 180,000 orders per week.
North Warwickshire Borough Council has already granted the outline planning consent for the site. The cost of the site will be financed by Ocado’s current banking facilities and reserves. The 999 year lease is £17.74m and has to be paid in cash. It will only be granted once some utilities and preparatory ground works are completed. Once this is done, Ocado will start the construction of its second Distribution Centre.
