Kevin David, owner of The Appliance Loft, Cincinnati, announced today that they are thrilled to have the EPA finally step up the standards for appliances receiving the Energy Star Rating. With consumers relying on the manufacturers to honestly detail the amount of energy used over the course of a year, they have been at the mercy of manufacturers’ claims. Until now, dishwashers and clothes washers were allowed to carry the Energy Star Rating but were not required to be randomly tested.
“By holding manufacturers to the same criteria throughout their product lines, this will not only force the makers of dishwashers to toe-the-line when it comes to their products, but also provide an accurate measure of just how efficient their appliances are in comparison with other models of equal value. The Energy Star rating holds a lot of merit with consumers. This needed to be done to keep the significance of that rating,” said Kevin David.
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers is one watch group that randomly tests appliances. In the past they have discovered that some appliances, namely refrigerators and freezers, used significantly more energy than their makers disclosed on their energy guides (which are required to be attached to any new product sold). By including dishwashers and clothes washers, two appliances which get considerable use in most homes, consumers will be able to rely on the actual efficiency ratings, rather than just assuming it is correct.
And this isn’t the first time dishwasher makers have been in the spotlight recently. Last year seventeen states required makers of dish and clothes detergents to remove the phosphates from their soap products. This has caused an issue in many kitchens as the dishes no longer come out as clean as before. The problem triggered a response by many dishwasher manufacturers to look at how they can improve the cleaning process without the chemical additives. The trickle down effect from the soap makers landed in the laps of the appliance manufacturers. Although the blame went back to the detergent, the dishwashers also came under scrutiny. Now with the Energy Star Rating requiring even more overall efficiency, consumers should be able to see an improved product in both energy efficiency and product performance. It’s good for the consumer all around.
“In the last eight years since we have been in business, we have strived to provide the best, highest quality products for our consumers as a standard we set for ourselves,” Kevin David said. “While we compete with the big box stores, here at The Appliance Loft, our advantage is that we know our products. Consumers don’t have to hunt down a salesperson when they come to our store. We are experts at what we do and can provide the necessary information, comparisons and have the actual products in place, in our showroom. Customers do not have to guess what the product looks like or how well it will perform.”
In an effort to support these new guidelines and applaud the manufacturers, The Appliance Loft will be offering customers free installation or delivery on all Bosch Dishwashers through the end of November, 2011. Bosch has proven to be one of the best performing products on the market, according to Consumer Reports.
