Continuing the legacy built by Broadway actor and producer, Jim Schlader, Woodminster Summer Musicals, a Oakland musical theater company, specializing in live performances and theater performances, presents the 2012 Jim Schlader Musical Theater Education Award. Now in its second year, the organization will present a grant of $1,000 to three youngsters in recognition of their dedication and commitment to musical theater.

“For more than 40 years, Jim Schlader produced the Woodminster Summer Musicals with a special interest in cultivating young talent in musical theater,” Kathy Kahn, of Woodminster Summer Musicals, said. “Hundreds, maybe thousands, of young performers were advised by Jim to get further education and training. In his memory, and because of many generous contributions made in his name, his organization can now offer more concrete encouragement to members of the Woodminster Company who are pursuing higher education.”

Jim Schlader is recognized as The Voice of Woodminster. He and his wife, Harriet, founded Producers Associates, Inc. and began producing the Woodminster Summer Musicals in 1967. Over 43 years, until he passed away in 2010 at the age of 96, Schlader was responsible for the production of about 150 live performances in Oakland's historic Woodminster Amphitheater.

“This year, we will be awarding three $1,000 awards,” Kahn said. “Applicants must have been in the company (cast or crew) at Woodminster in 2011 or 2012, and must be pursuing higher education in performing arts.”

Winners will be chosen based on their talent in musical theater performance and production; consistency in their contributions to the organization; and positive attitude and accomplishments as a team player.

Deadline for application is Aug. 19 and the winners will be announced on Sept. 16. Details on the 2012 Jim Schlader Musical Theater Education Award is available at http://www.woodminster.com/Webpages/PDFfiles/schladerscholarshipapp.pdf.

Meanwhile, the theater company continues with its performances this season. For more information, call Woodminster Summer Musicals at 510-531-9597 or visit online at woodminster.com.

About Woodminster Summer Musicals

Woodminster Summer Musicals are performed under the stars at Woodminster Amphitheater, an open-air performance facility in Joaquin Miller Park High in the Oakland Hills. For many East Bay families, it is a long-standing summer tradition to enjoy a picnic in the park and then see a musical at Woodminster. For more than four decades, Producers Associates, in partnership with the Oakland Park and Rec Department, has produced summer musicals at Woodminster Amphitheater. Today more people attend Woodminster Summer Musicals than any other resident performing arts company in Oakland.
