Fowler's no-nonsense approach to yoga has a long history: A former professional triathlete and cancer survivor, Fowler began using yoga decades ago to rehab from a bike-racing accident. She relied on it to help her through her successful battle with cancer. And in 2001, she founded Southern California's budding YAS Fitness Center empire to fill a void she saw in the fitness world by combining the strength, flexibility and stress-reducing benefits of yoga with take-no-prisoners cardio workouts. Fowler's down-to-earth attitude toward yoga is informed by those decades of experience practicing it—as an elite instructor who has certified over a thousand teachers in Yoga for Athletes®, as a sports pro and as a survivor. In fact, she likens practicing yoga to taking vitamins.
"I want people to do yoga so they can keep doing all the things in life they love to do," Fowler says. Fowler's "no granola" attitude causes many in the yoga world to brand her a rebel. While that may be true, she's definitely got a cause.
"I want to demystify yoga for everyday people," Fowler says. "I want to get people off the couch and onto the mat."
