The Travel Word’s decision to step up as a media sponsor hinges on its commitment to providing an international stage from which leaders in the responsible tourism community can showcase their accomplishments.

Last week, The Travel Word, a website geared to independent and responsible travelers headed off the beaten path, announced its media sponsorship of the 2013 Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards. The Awards, which recently launched for the seventh straight year, honor accommodation and tour operators committed to implementing responsible tourism practices across all corners of Asia.

Developed by Wild Asia, a Malaysian non-profit focused on sustainable development and responsible tourism initiatives, the awards are now accepting applications from businesses making a difference to their communities and environments by giving back through sustainable tourism. Seeking to help accommodation and tour operators gain international recognition for their dedication to responsible tourism, this year’s awards also showcase the innovative contributions of tourism businesses targeting a wide variety of travel tastes and budgets.

Grounded in the UN World Tourism Organization’s Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, the Responsible Tourism Awards have helped to shape international standards for environmentally and socially sound tourism. Launched in 2006, they remain the only Asia-wide awards committed to recognizing sustainable tourism. In 2013, The Travel Word has once again agreed to act as an official media sponsor of the Responsible Tourism Awards and to support all those who strive to give back to their destinations.

Awards contenders can enter to win in any of the following categories:

  • Best in Community Engagement and Development

This award recognizes exceptional commitment to supporting the local community and economy in which a business operates. (Open only to accommodation providers.)

  • Best in Cultural Preservation

This award recognizes engagement and efforts by tourism businesses in preserving, enhancing and promoting local cultures and heritage. (Open only to accommodation providers.)

  • Best in Protection of Natural Areas and/or Wildlife Conservation

This award recognizes tourism businesses’ consideration of the local environment and biodiversity by actively supporting and protecting natural assets. (Open only to accommodation providers.)

  • Best in Resource Efficiency

This award recognizes excellence in waste, water and energy management and sustainable architectural design in order to minimize a business’s environmental impact. (Open only to accommodation providers.)

  • Most Inspiring Responsible Tourism Accommodation Provider

This award recognizes the accommodation provider that excels in all of the above categories by taking into consideration all the key principles of responsible tourism (maximum positive impacts to the local community and minimum negative impacts to the environment) and awards innovation for the most inspiring accommodation of the year.

  • Most Inspiring Responsible Tour Operator

This award recognizes the tour operator that excels in all of the above categories by taking into consideration all the key principles of responsible tourism (maximum positive impacts to the local community and minimum negative impacts to the environment) and awards innovation for the most inspiring responsible tourism business of the year.

As part of its longstanding support for local travel businesses making a difference, The Travel Word’s decision to step up as a media sponsor hinges on its commitment to providing an international stage from which leaders in the responsible tourism community can showcase their accomplishments.

“Wild Asia’s Responsible Tourism Awards honor exactly the type of tourism businesses that we love to showcase," commented Laurel Angrist, an editor at The Travel Word. "Accommodation and tour operators who respect the communities, cultures and environments in which they are active are the key to the kind of sustainable tourism industry in which we believe.”

Readers can tune in to The Travel Word for updates on the award finalists and winners and for stories that inspire other tourism operators around the world to adopt a more sustainable approach to tourism.

Responsible tourism businesses can download an award application from tourism.wildasia.org. Deadline for entry is May 23. Winners will be announced at ITB Asia, the continent’s biggest business-to-business travel trade event, which is taking place this October in Singapore.
