Wrexham councillors are struggling with dragons at the moment – on paper, at least, until they can work out the best way of welcoming Englishmen who hit the border at Chirk Park.

This is an interesting project that, if approved, could create up to 200 jobs, bring three and-a-half million pounds into Wrexham every year – and do great things for Wales.

Wrexham councillors are struggling with dragons at the moment – on paper, at least, until they can work out the best way of welcoming Englishmen who hit the border at Chirk Park.

Simon Wingett, a well-known Wrexham businessman, has started a campaign to raise funds for the construction of his dream – the Waking of the Dragon, a landmark located at Chirk Park that will feature a tower made of glass topped by a bronze dragon.
Wrexham councillors had been recommended to approve the plans at meeting on Tuesday evening, but they wanted to discuss further such pressing issues as the project's business case, the dragon's colour and traffic management. It is claimed the project would create up to 200 jobs, bring £3.5m a year into Wrexham and do "great things" for Wales.

The UK Knack Group, Britain’s prestige executive employment consultancy, said on releasing the news last night, “This is an interesting project that, if approved, could create up to 200 jobs, bring three and-a-half million pounds into Wrexham every year – and do great things for Wales.”
Wrexham’s chief planning officer is Lawrence Isted, a fan of the plan, who described the application as a “unique and unprecedented proposal.”

Mr Wingett has done nothing by halves. His plans for the border beast include a 44mt tower featuring on the top a Welsh red dragon that will be around 23mt high and have a wingspan of 56mt. At the bottom of the tower there would be a visitor centre; this would include a café and kitchen, reception area, a gallery/education area, a retail area and a restaurant with general area.
Recent years have seen a large amount of redevelopment in Wrexham's town centre, and the Waking of the Dragon would be the perfect catalyst to a resurgent revival.
