“Commemoration events are happening throughout Halifax during the month of April” states General Manager Guido Kerpel. “As Halifax commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and we wanted to offer a special rate for those visiting from out of town.”
April 15, 2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Halifax, Nova Scotia played a large role in the days following the disaster. Halifax was the first port of call for many of the ships carrying survivors and wreckage. Halifax’s Fairview Cemetery became the final resting place for 150 of the Titanic’s victims, the largest number of victims anywhere in the world, and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has a permanent Titanic Exhibit.
There will be many commemorative special Halifax events & programs during the month of April. Here are a few places to visit while in Nova Scotia:
- Tour the region’s various historic Titanic sites: the cemeteries, the churches, and the former homes of Titanic passengers, to name a few.
- Visit exhibits at the Dartmouth Heritage Museum or at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where Titanic artifacts are a touching reminder of the ship’s lost luxury, her violent end and the special role our port played as the enormity of the disaster unfolded.
- Learn more about this significant chapter in our history by exploring the Nova Scotia Archives’ virtual Titanic exhibit and visiting the Bedford Institute of Oceanography to see a model of Titanic, as it sits today on the ocean floor.
