The Writer's Coffee Shop presents a special edition box set of the "Old Wounds" series by N.K. Smith

Fan fiction has given people a chance to be authors. It gives them a springboard. Who hasn’t been inspired by a song, movie or book? We encourage our authors to use that inspiration and make it their own.

Like the phenomenally popular "Fifty Shades of Grey" series, the "Old Wounds" series by N.K. Smith helped pave the way for the acceptance of former fan fiction novels. The Writer’s Coffee Shop took a chance on this series as one of its first titles in December 2010. The books were originally an extremely popular "Twilight" fan fiction story by instantkarmagirl. Both N.K Smith and the TWCS editing team tirelessly reworked the four-part series and turned it into a plot-twisting original work that is captivating readers around the globe.

Janine Savage, Editor in Chief for The Writer’s Coffee Shop has this to say about the process of converting a fan fiction story to an original work. “A lot goes into converting a fan fiction for publication. We look at the characters, names, personality, habits, quirks, hobbies, physical description, occupation, relationships, setting, and scenes, among other things. The editors at TWCS encourage our authors to remove as many of the elements of fan fiction as possible so the manuscript doesn’t feel like the original book. It’s quite normal to have a steady stream of e-mails between the editing department and our legal counsel for clarification, so we don’t break any copyright laws,”

Because "The Fifty Shades" trilogy has gone mainstream, the controversy over whether a fan fiction should be published as original fiction, is also being weighed in on blogs everywhere. Some critics feel it’s wrong to use an existing story to give you inspiration in writing your own. The founders of The Writer’s Coffee Shop share a different viewpoint.

Jenny Pedroza, Chief Marketing Officer of The Writer’s Coffee Shop, says, “Fan fiction has given people a chance to be authors. It gives them a springboard. Who hasn’t been inspired by a song, movie or book? We encourage our authors to use that inspiration and make it their own.”

The Writer’s Coffee Shop would like to showcase the popular and controversial "Old Wounds" series as another successful venture. The series focuses on the relationship between a troubled girl, Sophia, and an equally troubled boy, Elliot, the shy, withdrawn son of a doctor. The two are thrown together under difficult circumstances and as they grow closer, their secrets threaten to ruin everything they’ve built. Each book will take you deeper into their world and leave you wanting more. This story goes beyond its fan fiction roots and promises to become a classic in the making.

This deeply emotional story is full of twists and turns that will leave every reader happy they already have the next book. “That’s the beauty of a boxed set,” says Pedroza. “You have all four books at your fingertips. As you finish one, the next is waiting for you on your e-reader.” The Writer’s Coffee Shop offers you a unique story, but promises you may have a few sleepless nights, as you stay awake to read it.

In the special edition box set of the “Old Wounds” series, for $19.99 you will get all four books by N.K. Smith: Old Wounds, Little Battles, Weight of the World, and Where All Things Will Grow.
