Tiger.co.uk has today revealed a massive increase in the numbers of UK drivers turning to “black box” insurance products as a way to get cheap car insurance. In the period between October 2012 and January 2013, sales of these telematics insurance policies accounted for just under 18% of all policies sold through the independent car insurance comparison site. This is up from just under 12% in the eight months before this period.

Telematics insurance uses an on-board device to measure actual driving behaviour, using acceleration, braking, cornering, speed and other recorded data in order to calculate car insurance premiums. Safer drivers often benefit from lower premiums than they could obtain through “standard” policies which are based on data averages across multiple drivers.

The increase in popularity of these policies recorded by Tiger.co.uk has been driven by greater uptake amongst female motorists and younger drivers, encouraged by a raft of new telematics products coming on to the UK market. Women now account for almost 40% of telematics insurance policy sales on Tiger.co.uk, whilst drivers under 25s now make up two-thirds of all buyers.

Commenting on this data, Andrew Goulborn, Tiger.co.uk’s Commercial Director, offered his views: “We believe that Tiger.co.uk offers UK insurance shoppers more telematics insurance brands than any other comparison site – including the heavily advertised ones. We have 10 live brands, double the number we had on the site a year ago and this offers our site users, particularly those looking for young drivers’ car insurance, some great prices and a choice of providers, including well known brands like Bell, Hastings and the AA. We will be adding more brands to the site over the next few months and we expect these new generation of insurance policies to account for about 20% of our sales by the end of 2013.”
