Tom James Company, the world’s largest manufacturer and retailer of custom men’s (and women’s) clothing, met at the Marriott Waterside in Tampa recently to celebrate the success of 2011 and to introduce their new Spring 2012 custom lines. Tom James Company finished the year up 10% in sales.
Fall of 2011 marked Tom James’ 45 years in business. They present a new Fall Line in July of every year, and a Spring Line in January. Their business model puts their nearly 500 professional clothiers on the street and not in stores.
“Our tag line is ‘We Come to You with Fine Clothing,”’ said Todd Browne, President of Tom James Retail, “Custom Clothing is very popular today and the fact we go directly to our clients makes our model unique.”
In a time where people crave efficiency and convenience, the model is widely embraced.
“Perhaps it’s that people are working harder for their money. Perhaps it’s that our customers don’t like to shop, but whatever the reason,” said Browne, “Our business is up. We’re hiring!”
It’s a service their customers appreciate.
“You won’t catch me in a mall, I don’t have time,” said Shawn Vinson of Vinson Mortgage in St. Louis. “With Tom James, I have a great personal clothier, Ben Lawler, who comes directly to me and the fact most of their products are Made in the USA is a real bonus.”
Browne notes it’s not only convenience that draws their clients. Customization is also a key factor.

At their International Meeting, Tom James Company introduced their Spring 2012 lines and videos of the behind-the-scenes photo shoots. It’s about what you like,” said Catherine Conway, Director of Merchandising.
