TomoTherapy Co-Founder to Speak at North Carolina IMRT/IGRT Symposium

MADISON, Wis. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) April 7, 2008 -- TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TOMO) announced today that company co-founder Thomas Rock Mackie, Ph.D., will speak at an upcoming symposium on intensity-modulated and image-guided radiation therapy (IMRT/IGRT). The symposium, co-sponsored by Duke University and East Carolina University, will be held on April 19, 2008 in Greenville, N.C. Dr. Mackie will discuss the clinical advantages of TomoTherapys unique, highly-modulated mode of radiation delivery.

I am honored to accept this invitation to speak, said Dr. Mackie. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss with my colleagues how helical TomoTherapy® is able to achieve consistently high-quality dose distributions across a wide range of cases. Weve effectively eliminated the need for clinical reliance upon complex techniques such as non-axial or non-coplanar arcs.

News Image The TomoTherapy® Hi·Art® treatment system is a novel radiation therapy platform that uses a patented binary multi-leaf collimator (MLC) to modulate the radiation beam as it rotates around the patient. The system includes integrated 3D CT-based image guidance and adaptive radiation therapy, leveraging the design advantages of a CT platform and the tight integration afforded by a centralized planning, imaging and treatment database.

Dr. Mackie co-founded TomoTherapy with Paul Reckwerdt in 1997, and currently serves as the companys chairman of the board. Dr. Mackie is also a professor in the departments of Medical Physics and Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin.

This will be the second annual North Carolina IMRT/IGRT Symposium. This years theme is Integrating New Technology in Radiation Oncology. In speaking at this event, Dr. Mackie will join professors and clinicians from East Carolina University School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, and Baptist Medical Center.
