New book looks at the issues surrounding physician-assisted dying

After reading his book, Preston hopes readers will talk with their doctors about this issue and that they will understand how to obtain a peaceful death. He also wants doctors to “change their medieval approach to dying patients.”

Tom Preston has had a 20-year interest in advancing the cause of physician-assisted death. Over the years, he has noticed that many physicians believe patients should have the option, but they do not support physician-assisted dying. In “Doctor, Please Help Me Die” (published by iUniverse), Preston takes a closer look at the controversial issue of physician-assisted death.

Readers will join Preston as he presents a thorough overview and discussion of end-of-life issues and physician-assisted death in the United State. The book looks at this issue through the lens of the “history of patients seeking relief from suffering at the end of life and discusses how cultural and professional customs have inhibited many doctors from helping their patients at the end,” explains Preston.

He also shows how most doctors, as he says, fail their patients by not discussing dying with them. And he says that when doctors say they must not help patients die they deceive the public because many do use medical means to help some patients die but refuse to give patients control over how and when it happens. With a nod toward the religious, political and legal battles, Preston covers all of the ins-and-outs through the assisted-death process.

After reading his book, Preston hopes readers will talk with their doctors about this issue and that they will understand how to obtain a peaceful death. He also wants doctors to “change their medieval approach to dying patients.”
