American Bar Association (ABA) President William Robinson recently named Peter Bennett, President of The Bennett Law Firm in Portland, ME, as chair of the Association’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence.

“Our nation’s courts are under an unprecedented attack from various political and other interests that have created a crisis which is interfering with the judiciary’s ability to deliver fair and impartial justice. Our goal is to protect the judiciary’s ability to function as envisioned by the founding fathers and to educate all segments of the public as to why a fair and impartial judiciary remains the cornerstone of a government based upon the rule of law.” - Peter Bennett, President of The Bennett Law Firm P.A.

The ABA’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence was established in 1997. The purpose of the Committee is to promote awareness of the values of an independent, accountable and efficient judiciary and to assist bar associations in responding to unwarranted criticism of judges. The Standing Committee on Judicial Independence serves as the ABA's clearinghouse of information on judicial independence and judicial selection in state, local and administrative judiciary.

Additionally, the Committee’s mission is to accomplish the following:

  • Assist courts, administrative judiciaries and state, local and territorial bar associations in considering and effectuating responses to infringement of judicial independence.
  • Encourage public awareness and appreciation of the importance of judicial independence and merit selection to the American judicial system and the rule of law.
  • Make recommendations on ways to improve and enhance the institutional independence and efficiency of state, territorial and local judiciaries and encourage appropriate accountability to enhance judicial independence and the efficient administration of justice.
  • Act as a clearinghouse for the Association's activities dealing with the judicial independence of state, local and administrative judiciaries.

Attorney Bennett, who is nationally recognized as a leader representing management in the field of labor and employment law, has served the association in numerous capacities for more than two decades and is also a member of the ABA Justice Center Coordinating Council. Amongst his various positions, Bennett recently served as Chair of the Association’s 24,500 member Tort, Trial and Insurance Practice Section.
