Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 17, 2012
A late-summer hail storm hit the Atlanta, Georgia, area in September 2010, causing widespread damage to homes in Smyrna, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Duluth, Sugar Hill and Newman. Additional storm damage was caused by high winds that swept through the metro area.
Since then, Thomas Mukon has seen a sharp uptick in the number of calls he’s getting to assess whether roofs have hail damage. Mukon is the owner of Yankee Tradesman, LLC, a roofing contractor based in Sandy Springs.
“We got calls right after the storm hit,” says Mukon. “And we’re still getting calls from people whose neighbors are having their roofs replaced due to hail damage. We’ve replaced dozens of roofs since the storm.”
If you think your roof may have suffered hail damage, the first thing to do is to have it checked out by a roofing specialist. “Sometimes the damage is obvious,” says Mukon. “There is damage to the roof or dents in the skylight trim or the metal fixtures or the chimney pans. Other times, however, the damage is less obvious. You look at the shingle and determine whether any of the stones have been knocked out of it. If it’s really big hail, it’s really obvious. But sometimes you have to look really closely at quarter-inch spots where the gravel has been knocked out.”
If Mukon determines there has, indeed, been hail damage to the roof, he will tell the homeowner to contact the insurance company to get the ball rolling. Mukon says that once he gets the go-ahead, he can be in and out of most projects in about two days, depending on the size of the roof.
If you suspect hail damage to your roof, it is important to act quickly, as many insurance policies have a time limit on filing a claim from the time of the storm.
