The moment I saw the movie poster for ‘The Great Gatsby’, I knew Topazery’s Art Deco Filigree Sapphire Bracelet would look right at home with the rest of the character’s 1920s ensemble.

When F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic “The Great Gatsby” hits movie theaters this week, the glitzy style, fashion and excess that ruled the 1920s will enthrall fans all over again almost a full century later. To celebrate that Roaring Twenties resurgence, Topazery Jewelry has just selected a 1920s Art Deco Filigree Sapphire Bracelet as its May spotlight piece of Great Gatsby Jewelry.

Set in America’s Roaring Twenties, the classic novel turned film “The Great Gatsby” tells the ill-fated obsession of millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) for the married Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). As the movie’s synopsis explains, the Roaring 1920s represented an era of “loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks.” It was also a time of fringed flapper dresses as well as elaborate jewelry and accessories.

In a recent article titled “1920s fashion roars back in ‘The Great Gatsby’,” the Los Angeles Times singled out the “tasseled pendant necklaces and bejeweled diamond-and-pearl headpieces that bedeck Carey Mulligan's Daisy Buchanan” as copycat pieces fans of the film will soon be clamoring for. In fact, the upscale jeweler Tiffany & Co. has already launched a new Jazz Age collection inspired by the movie and its stars.

For those who want an authentic piece of the Gatsby Roaring Twenties past instead of a reproduction, antique jewelry boutiques carry genuine 1920s pieces. In honor of Gatsby fever, one such boutique, Topazery, has hand-selected a 1920s Art Deco Antique Bracelet as its showcase item for May.

“The 1920s marked the height of the Art Deco period,” explains Topazery’s spokesperson Jan Walden. “Dazzling jewelry in bold, bright colors with straight lines complimented the flamboyant and playful attitude of the day. New geometric cuts for gems and long earrings were popular, along with diamond watches, pearls, beads and cocktail rings. Emeralds, sapphires and rubies also became the gems of choice.”

Movie posters for “The Great Gatsby” show supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Jordan Baker, seductively posing with a pair of Art Deco bracelets dripping down her wrist. That poster was the motivation behind Topazery’s May spotlight piece. “The moment I saw that image, I knew Topazery’s Art Deco Filigree Sapphire Bracelet would look right at home with the rest of the character’s 1920s ensemble. The bracelet pairs a vibrant blue sapphire with the geometric metallic cutwork that was all the rage during the Roaring Twenties.
