Rotondo Law Firm (http://www.RotondoLaw.com), a Greater Toronto Area (GTA) personal injury law firm and GTA wrongful death law firm, warns drivers and pedestrians to be careful after Toronto experienced its worst year for traffic fatalities in close to 10 years.
“At the start of the year, it looked like the city of Toronto would continue its trend of fewer traffic-related deaths. Between 2009 and 2012, the city reduced its number of traffic fatalities, and in the first half of 2013, Toronto was on pace to tie its 2011 record low of 36 cyclist, motorist, pedestrian, and vehicle fatalities,” says P. Michael Rotondo, lead counsel at Rotondo Law Firm. “Unfortunately, the second half of the year was much worse. 45 traffic fatalities were reported in the last six months of 2013—that’s more than all reported traffic fatalities in 2012.” (Source: Hains, D., “Toronto’s Bad Year for Traffic Fatalities,” Torontoist.com, January 16, 2014; http://torontoist.com/2014/01/torontos-bad-year-for-traffic-fatalities/.)
Overall, the number of traffic fatalities in 2013 increased 43% year-over-year to 63—more specifically, the number of pedestrian deaths soared by 67% In fact, for the first time since 2004, the number of traffic fatalities in Toronto surpassed the number of homicides. The most vulnerable demographic are seniors; even though they make up only 14% of Toronto’s population, the elderly accounted for a disproportionate 60% of pedestrian fatalities last year. “Every year, hundreds of people are killed in traffic-related accidents across the province and thousands more are injured through no fault of their own, the most vulnerable victims being children and the elderly,” Rotondo observes. “And it’s rare to meet a victim who is receiving the full amount of benefits that they are entitled to following an accident without the help of a personal injury lawyer.”
Those injured as a result of a motor vehicle accident or collision, regardless of whether they were the driver, passenger, pedestrian, or a cyclist, have rights they may not even be aware of, Rotondo explains. It’s also important for families to understand their legal options if a loved one has been killed in a traffic-related accident.
“If someone is injured in a traffic-related accident, they owe it to themselves and their family to get every benefit they are entitled to. And while it will not erase the pain, it can at least help the healing on the road to recovery,” he concludes. “That’s why it’s imperative to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer in the GTA immediately after seeking medical attention.”
