While it is gratifying to see Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon Inc. finally admit these products are too dangerous to be sold, it remains a tragedy that so many thousands of woman had to be catastrophically injured before the decision was made."

Adam Slater, a New Jersey products liability and certified civil trial attorney who is co-liaison counsel in in New Jersey litigation involving more than 700 cases against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Ethicon, Inc., In re Pelvic Mesh/Gynecare Litigation, Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Atlantic County, Docket No.: ATL-6341-10, Case Number 291 discusses the recent decision by Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Inc. to withdraw the sale of 4 of its pelvic mesh products in the United States and worldwide.
J & J and its subsidiary Ethicon have advised the FDA that they will "stop commercializing GYNECARE TVT Secur™ system, GYNECARE Prosima™ Pelvic Floor Repair System, GYNECARE Prolift™ Pelvic Floor Repair System, and GYNECARE Prolift +M™ Pelvic Floor Repair System in the United States." Lawyers for Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon have advised the New Jersey Superior Court judge managing more than 700 cases involving these medical device products that the products will no longer be "commercialized," in the United States.
New Jersey products liability attorney Adam Slater, who filed the first New Jersey State Court case against Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Inc. claiming that Prolift was a defective product, in early 2008, commented on this latest announcement: "While it is gratifying to see Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Inc. finally admit these products are too dangerous to be sold, it remains a tragedy that so many thousands of woman had to be catastrophically injured before the decision was made."
The listed products are constructed of synthetic polypropylene and are intended to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence in women. From the first marketing of these products women have suffered severe injuries, including eroded and exposed mesh, infection, foreign body reaction, contracted mesh, chronic pain, pelvic and vaginal scarring, urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, and dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse). The treatment of these complications is often complex and many women have undergone multiple operations involving repeated surgery through the vagina to attempt to locate and remove eroded and scarred mesh, often causing significant permanent damage.
Transvaginal Mesh Attorney Adam Slater, who is trial counsel in four of the seven cases that are being narrowed for the first New Jersey Prolift trial, and is co-liaison counsel in the New Jersey litigation involving more than 700 cases against Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Inc., In re Pelvic Mesh Gynecare Litigation, Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Atlantic County, Docket Number ATL-6341-10, Case Number 291, stated, "Our investigation demonstrates that these products never should have been commercially marketed, but were as a result of the terrible judgment shown by Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Inc. We look forward to the day when the full story will be told."
