Post Office Travel Insurance research shows travellers risk unforeseen costs by cutting back on travel insurance.

With many household budgets being squeezed, skimping on travel insurance can seem like an easy way to save money on the costs of the holiday. However, Post Office Travel Insurance warns that all travellers should make sure they have adequate travel insurance in place - no matter where their destination may be.

According to Post Office Travel Insurance research, 23 per cent of travellers are considering not taking out holiday insurance in order to save money. With many UK holidaymakers travelling to exotic destinations around the globe, appropriate travel insurance is vital to help deal with holiday mishaps such as injury, illness and theft.

Research from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office reports that over 3,000 UK travellers were hospitalised while overseas last year with India, Thailand and Australia all appearing in the top ten countries where UK residents required consular assistance while on holiday. Despite these figures, however, many travellers may be tempted to venture abroad without sufficient travel insurance cover.

Post Office Travel Insurance suggests that while UK holidaymakers may have become more adventurous in their holiday destinations, some are not doing enough preparation before they go, particularly with regards to organising appropriate levels of travel insurance.

Head of Post Office Travel Insurance Rachel Croft said: "With many household budgets being squeezed, skimping on travel insurance can seem like an easy way to save money on the costs of the holiday. However, Post Office Travel Insurance warns that all travellers should make sure they have adequate travel insurance in place - no matter where their destination may be."
