New Post Office Travel Money research has revealed that Portugal currently offers UK tourists the best foreign currency value on typical summer holiday spending. The Post Office Beach Barometer compares equivalent prices across European destinations for 12 typical summer holiday items, including family meals, buckets and spades, lilos and pedalo rides.
This year's Beach Barometer finds Portugal taking the top spot as a destination where UK holidaymakers' travel money could go further, ahead of Bulgaria and Spain, after prices in the country crashed by 30 per cent.
However, Turkey and Croatia saw equivalent foreign currency prices rising by 12 and 20 per cent respectively, so UK holidaymakers heading to these countries may need to budget their travel money spending carefully before jetting away. Italy proved to be the priciest destination overall for typical travel money items, with the most expensive prices for half-day sun lounger hire and the highest equivalent foreign currency cost for a family meal.
The Post Office Travel Money Beach Barometer also found that UK travelling parents could find their travel money goes less far in some European destinations on typical children's holiday items like jelly shoes, lilos and pedalo rides. In France and Greece, families could pay out also twice as much foreign currency for these items than in comparatively cheaper-priced Malta or Bulgaria.
