According to ABTA’s Consumer Trends research, 19% of UK holidaymakers go abroad without arranging travel insurance, with a further 17% saying that they believe it’s ‘not important’ to take out holiday insurance when going abroad. But not taking out the appropriate travel insurance for a holiday could lead to much higher bills later, warn Travelsoon.com.
Luke Nathan of online travel consultants Travelsoon.com says: “The results of ABTA’s Consumer Trends research are really quite shocking, as they reveal that nearly a fifth of British travellers do not consider taking out something as essential as travel insurance when booking a foreign holiday. The harsh truth about going on holiday without travel insurance is that, depending on the destination, the traveller will probably be liable for the cost of any medical treatment or the price of new tickets for rescheduled flights on holiday.”
While travel insurance usually pays out for things like lost luggage and valuables, it can also help safeguard travellers in the event of a terrorist attack or cases of civil unrest in the holiday destination. Travel insurance will help protect travellers if they have to catch an earlier flight, or have their flights cancelled as the result of disruption caused by certain events, such as terrorism and demonstrations.
Nathan continues: “With the political situation in Egypt currently causing some travellers and travel companies cause for concern, with some flight schedules being disrupted and a number of travellers being warned not to fly. While no one could have predicted that this would happen, sudden political situations like this highlight the need for travellers to look into taking out travel insurance to protect them and their money if the worst should happen. We advise all our customers to take out travel insurance that suits their circumstances, and to read the small print.”
