New research from Stanford University has added to a growing body of evidence warning of the ill effects of sleep deprivation. Their study discovered that the body's peak disease battling immune system activity occurs at night, while the immune system is weakest during the day. Sleep deprivation is caused by a combination of factors however lack of sufficient exercise during the day and the corresponding ill effects is perhaps the most pervasive. Treadmill desks offer a solution which increases the activity of the immune system during the day and assists in the body's ability to engage in restorative sleep at night.
Mimi-Shirasu-Hiza, one of the Stanford researchers stated, "These results suggest that immunity is stronger at night, consistent with the hypothesis that circadian proteins up regulate restorative functions such as specific immune responses during sleep, when animals are not engaged in metabolically costly activities." In other words, quality nightly sleep is critical for the body to fight off disease.
The dangers of sleep deprivation go beyond disease prevention and have been documented in numerous studies. The National Sleep Foundation reports that 100,000 vehicle crashes are the direct result of insufficient sleep resulting in 1,500 deaths annually. Individuals receiving less than 7.5 hours of sleep on a regular basis are at a greater risk for stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, obesity and a multitude of other diseases. Treadmill desks, allowing individuals to walk during work hours, combat all of these risk factors and as an added benefit assist an individual in achieving quality, restorative sleep at night.
"It is no surprise that exercise and sleep are related and necessary for optimum health," states Steve Bordley of TrekDesk, a treadmill desk manufacturer. "We have evolved over millions of years to be an active species during the day and recharge at night yet over the last 50 years our lifestyle has turned that paradigm on its head with all the poor health effects we are experiencing today."
While the lack of necessary daily exercise is troubling to most health professionals the blame for America's health issues centers primarily on obesity and dietary issues. "We are urging Americans to use common sense. They simply cannot pop a vitamin in the morning, sit all day, diet numerous times during the year and expect to sleep well or remain healthy," stated Bordley.
Sufficient amounts of daily exercise are out of the reach for most Americans who battle the clock as much as their waistlines. Exercise needs to be easily attainable in the workspace since that is where employees spend the majority of the day.
Treadmill desks offer a promising solution and have been adopted by numerous companies in the United States. Employees report feeling more energized, productive, and happier. Weight loss and better sleep are an added benefit as well contributing to a much healthier employee. Reduced heath care costs and increased productivity levels are well received by employers as well.
