Passion and practicality merged for Marc Ramos and Freddy Diaz when they decided to launch their TruBlue House Care franchise to serve Merrillville, Ind., and its Northwest Indiana neighbors. As business partners, they could see the benefits for their community and their own futures.
“TruBlue had all the elements we were seeking for our business, plus a bit more,” Diaz said. “We saw the synergy of three household services – lawn care, maintenance and repairs, and maid service – from an ongoing client care perspective. It just made sense for clients and for us. When a client can call one person to get most anything done, that’s a huge advantage. That client knows the work will be done right by someone they can trust.”
The two men met when Diaz did some work for Ramos in one of his other businesses. Ramos owns a franchise that provides in-home, non-medical care for seniors and others in need of it.
“I had a small toolkit with me,” Ramos said, “because sometimes I would fix minor things that could become dangerous for my employees. Maybe I’d fix a broken latch or a loose door hinge, nothing too complicated. But I could see where caregiving for the person left off and caring for the house picked up. And, I saw that often when work was done at a client’s home, it was not done properly or in a timely manner. It was frustrating, because I have a passion for doing the job right as quickly as possible. If you’ve got no heart for treating people right, then you shouldn’t take the job.”
Diaz came to the partnership having spent more than 10 years in corporate America, while maintaining his connection to his family roots.
“My grandfather worked in construction back in Puerto Rico most of his life,” he said. “My father and uncles also worked in the trades, primarily masonry. It’s always been a hands-on learning process. I became involved in real estate in 2002 doing renovations and contracting. I managed some rentals, flipped a house, built kitchens and bathrooms, little bits at a time as opportunities arose.”
Like Ramos, Diaz saw the importance of providing quality service in a timely manner. When the two men discussed creating the house maintenance business, they thought in terms of lawn care and house repairs. The TruBlue business model just clicked for them.
“We weren’t looking at maid services, but that just made sense,” Diaz said. “TruBlue had all the elements we were looking for.”
Ramos agreed, noting that client relations is lacking in many service industries. “There are a lot of businesses out there, but you’ve got to have someone respond with the same sense of urgency as the client feels. That’s how we approach service.”
Larsen Sharp, vice president of operations for TruBlue, said the business model attracts professionals like Diaz and Ramos.
“They, like our other owners, recognize the growing need for TruBlue services,” he said. “We provide our owners with quality training, marketing and resource materials, so they have all the tools to help their clients. When we started the franchise, we believed our biggest market would be senior homeowners who wanted to remain in their houses, but needed help with the maintenance. What we’ve found is that many other people appreciate our services, too, because they either don’t have the time, the skills or the desire to tackle all the household chores themselves.”
Ramos said TruBlue is fulfilling his vision of one company uniting household service providers to work together for the client’s benefit.
“We’ll have the right people to fix that faulty outlet or to clear that snowy driveway,” he said. “It’s about providing a total package of services within one company.”
Diaz said initial responses to the new franchise have been positive.
“Everybody’s very receptive,” he said. “It’s estimated that at any given time, homeowners have 20-plus items they want to get taken care of. But people don’t like having to call out two or three different companies to get bids or to take on a project. With a huge percentage of households having two working adults, they’re tied up on their jobs plus all the travel time. For the most part, people just want to relax and enjoy their homes without the hassles, especially if the price is right.
