Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) April 24, 2012
The National Restaurant Association has announced that the restaurant industry has created 560,000 jobs in the last two years. Outranking the national average, this job growth indicates a healing economy that can support a higher percentage of its workers. Twigs Café, a local restaurant in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, anticipates that this growth will spark further expansion of its brand.
According to the aforementioned press release, “The National Restaurant Association reports that restaurants have added more than 560,000 jobs since the beginning of the employment recovery, with more than 200,000 of those positions created in the last six months. As the nation’s second-largest private sector employer with a workforce of nearly 13 million—almost 10 percent of the U.S. workforce—the restaurant industry continues to be one of the strongest job creators in the nation and a pillar of the overall economy.”
This creation of jobs indicates many positive things about the recovery of the economic landscape. For Lori Bogedin, owner of Twigs Café, it signifies that her restaurant may experience expansion in the near future. Today, she is thankful that industry growth indicates more jobs for community members.
“Working for a local restaurant is more than just a day job,” commented Bogedin. “Our employees are gainfully employed. Through benefits for full-time employees and flexible schedules for part-time staff members who are still in school, we are able to help our Twigs family benefit from an employment opportunity that matches their personal needs. We employ, on average, 40 team members. Eight of these full-time employees have paid benefits.”
But job creation is not the only value to come out of this industry expansion. A business owner who is dedicated to shopping locally, Bogedin knows how much of a positive impact the expansion of locally-owned businesses can have on their surrounding communities. As such, she is ecstatic that the industry is growing—and that her own business and community may benefit from it.
“Roughly 80 percent of each dollar spent in a local business finds its way back into the community,” noted Bogedin, “whereas only 20 to 40 percent of the income made by chain restaurants benefits the people who are actually spending their money. Naturally, then, supporting locally-owned business is the better decision! And with this expansion, I’m excited to see how much local organizations can grow and, in return, benefit their communities.”
