Each year the paper calls for nominations from readers, telling them about a business that gives them good service

An Ipswich businessman says he is humbled by the loyalty of his customers. Wayne Gough's JAXQuickfit Tyres at Ipswich West was the winner of the Motor Vehicle Services Division of the Business Achievers Awards run by the Ipswich News, which is part of the Quest Community Newspapers group.
The Business Achiever Awards were established in 1994 by Queensland's Quest Community Newspapers to allow communities served by the papers the opportunity to recognise and reward their favourite local businesses.
"Each year the paper calls for nominations from readers, telling them about a business that gives them good service," says Wayne.
To be a finalist you need to be in the top six businesses in your category when it comes to the votes from the public, "so when we received a letter from the paper saying we were official, we were pretty excited and very grateful to the customers who had nominated us."
The next step, as Wayne and his team of four soon discovered, was a letter saying they were one of six finalists.
"We were up against a big mechanical services company and the local Ford dealership among others, so we were in very illustrious company. After that there's a 'mystery shop' process by the judges and depending how they rate you, there are extra points for that," said Wayne. "The combination of your points tally from the nominations and from the judges decides the winner - and for our category, that was us. We didn't rate ourselves a big chance so we would like to say a huge thankyou to all our customers who voted for us. This is really special."
Wayne was actually away on leave the weekend the Awards ceremony was held and only found out when he got into work on the Monday morning.
"There was the plaque on my desk and I thought 'fantastic, we've won!' There was such a big representation in our section - five car dealerships, several mechanical workshops and panel beaters and 13 tyre dealers - so we really did have some serious competition," said Wayne. "Winning is terrific. I was just beside myself!"
Aside from the honour of winning an Award that he believes will help the business grow even further, Wayne says it's confirmation that his team is on track with the way they like to operate. "Our business philosophy is that if you treat everyone the way you want to be treated, then the business will go okay. So to get feedback from customers like this, when they have taken the trouble to nominate you for such a prestigious an award, you think 'it's working' and that's very satisfying."
Wayne has owned JAXQuickfit Tyres at Ipswich West for four years. A former director of the Quickfit Tyres group, he sold out just before Quickfit merged with JAX Tyres and is thoroughly enjoying being 'back at the coalface' of the tyre industry.
He first came into the business in 1968 and has had a wide range of experience along the way, including buying and running his own service station and working on the wholesale side of the tyre industry, before joining the Quickfit group.
JAXQuickfit Tyres, Ipswich West, is one of a chain of 70 JAXQuickfit Tyre stores, operating from north Queensland to Tasmania.
It offers a variety of mechanical services such as brakes, suspension and pink and blue slips, as well as supplying and fitting the world's leading tyre brands including BF Goodrich, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear, Pirelli and Firestone Tyres. They also carry commercial and 4WD tyres a wide range of top-line alloy and steel wheels including CSA & BBS rims.
Customers who buy two tyres and a wheel alignment from Wayne and his team are eligible for membership of the JAXQuickfit Gold Club Tyre Maintenance Plan which offers huge savings on new tyres, tyre maintenance and servicing as well as a range of special offers.
