University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) is challenging Central Texas college students to prove how far they can stretch the dollar during this tough economic time by hosting an exciting online video contest and social media campaign running through September 17th. The purpose of this challenge is to teach young adults the benefits of making smart financial decisions at each stage of life and to let people know how much can be achieved with only $20.09 in the bank.

Participants simply record creative ways to make $20.09 last as long as possible and post their videos, which must be between 30 seconds and three minutes long, on YouTube via http://www.twenty09challenge.com or the UFCU Facebook page. Whether its purchasing dorm room decorations, stocking the mini-fridge or enjoying a night out on the town, entries will be judged solely on how creatively they spend their money and how inspiring their actions are to others. The first place winner will receive a $500 VISA® gift card, second place will receive a $300 VISA® gift card and third place will receive a $100 VISA® gift card.

The idea for this contest came from a University of Texas student and social media strategist representing UFCU, David Lee. "I was inspired by the basic concept of showing people the benefits of an action rather than merely telling them that it's beneficial," says Lee.

In fact, he was so inspired that he decided to live on the UFCU budget for 20 days and nine minutes while blogging about his experience. Readers can view his daily entries and photos on http://twentydays.wordpress.com/. His tales of struggling to cook homemade potato chips, attending meetings and events offering free meals, and learning to become a frugal grocery shopper present a bit of insight into the lives of many people who have been forced to cut back on spending, as well as ways to save significant amounts of money by making smarter financial decisions.
