SOC, which represents the broad internal and international democratic movement, is headed by its President Moaz Al-Khatib, Vice Presidents Suheir Atassi and Riad Seif, and Executive Director Mustafa Sabbagh. As the first Western nation to officially recognize the SOC as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, France has again moved swiftly in support of the popular Syrian uprising.

CDS urges the United States to continue and strengthen its support of the SOC and to join allies France, Turkey, the Arab League, and others in officially recognizing COS as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, in support of peace and democracy in Syria.

The Coalition for a Democratic Syria was formed in April of 2012 to coordinate the efforts of various Syrian-American groups. CDS member organizations are: Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), Syrian American Council (SAC), United for a Free Syria (UFS), Syrian Expatriates Organization (SEO), and Syrian American Alliance (SAA).
